Justice man charged in crash that killed Darien man

March 12, 2012 (CHICAGO) Sam Safi, 28, of Justice, is charged with driving under the influence for allegedly causing the crash on 95th near La Grange Road early Saturday morning.

Cafi was charged with eight felony counts of driving under the influence, including a DUI resulting in a death, according to a release from the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

Cafi was driving west on 95th Street at a high rate of speed about 2 a.m. when he struck a vehicle that was traveling southbound on La Grange Road, causing to roll over several times before coming to a rest in the westbound lanes of 95th Street, the release said.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, the release said. Three passengers in Cafi's vehicle were taken in critical condition to Christ Hospital. The front-seat passenger, Ryan Osowski, 28, of Darien, was ejected from the vehicle and died from his injuries. The other two passengers remain hospitalized.

Witnesses said Cafi exited his vehicle after the crash and made statements that he had been drinking at a nearby bar with the passengers, the release said. He was administered field sobriety and Breathalyzer tests that both revealed alcohol intoxication.

Cafi is expected April 2 in Bridgeview court.
