The bald eagle has been taken off the endangered species list, but the birds are still protected under federal law. Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service say the police would have had to obtain a special permit to build a gun range so close to the nest.
But police spokeswoman Melissa Stratton says the department decided to drop its plan for a gun range after hearing about the eagles and soliciting advice from community groups.
