March 13, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Katie Lunn, 26, was on her way home from a dance competition on April 16, 2010, when the car she was in she was hit by a train. The signal at the railroad track crossing had been de-activated during repairs and had not been turned back on.

Illinois Central Railroad Company and Lunn's estate settled for $6 million late Monday night, on the eve of the trial.

"Our primary focus has been and will continue to be the safety of others and that we will continue to work towards that goal with the hope that future loss of life can be prevented," Jerry Lunn, Katie's father, said through a statement.
