Patients with diabetes, ulcers may share new bacteria

March 14, 2012 (CHICAGO)

They may share a common bacterium called H. Pylori.

A study in the Journal of Infection Diseases, scientists found the presence of H. Pylori bacteria was consistently associated with elevated levels of blood glucose levels, an indicator of diabetes. The association was strongest in obese people.

In some people, H. Pylori infection of the stomach acquired in early childhood becomes persistent and can lead to ulcers in the stomach and small intestine.
