March 21, 2012

The three-vehicle crash happened about 6:20 a.m. near the intersection of Route 120 and U.S. Highway 12, a Lakemoor police dispatcher said.

A backseat passenger in one of the vehicles was killed.

The crash involved a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier, a 2004 GMC pickup truck and a 2008 Ford van, according to a release from the Wauconda Police Department. The crash caused extensive damage to the Cavalier, heavy damage to the pickup and moderate damage to the van.

The backseat passenger from the Cavalier was ejected from the car and found lying in the roadway. He was dead on the scene, police said. The driver and front seat passenger in the Chevrolet were taken to Condell Hospital and Good Shepherd Hospital, respectively, and treated for minor injuries.

The driver and two passengers in the GMC were shaken up, but not injured, police said. The driver of the Ford was not injured. The names of those involved were being withheld until the conclusion of the investigation.

Wauconda police do not believe there is any reason to suspect that drugs or alcohol were factors in this accident.

Police had all southbound lanes of Rand Road closed with the northbound lanes were down to one lane, for four hours.
