Vandals damage historic cross at Bridgeport church

April 3, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The cross is more than 100 years old.

The pastor of St. Mary of Perpetual Help Church found it nearly bent in half when he walked out of the church rectory Tuesday morning.

"Needless to say, something like this is devastating," said St. Mary religious education coordinator Collette Hylka. "I feel sad. I was born and raised in this church. Something like this, almost like in your own house ... and of course, Holy Week makes it little a more pronounced and sad, but we'll get it fixed and go on."

A parishioner who lives across the street and also happens to be a metal worker will help repair the cross.
