The Internal Revenue Service is testing a program that allows taxpayers to use two-way video conferencing for assistance with tax issues and questions about filings or refunds.
Now, an independent watchdog unit of the IRS wants to expand the testing of video conferencing to include virtual audits. A taxpayer undergoing an audit would then be able to log onto a secure site and talk face to face with an IRS agent.
Under the current system, the IRS sends letters asking questions or requesting more information about a tax filing.
