Social media may result in negative reactions
April 9, 2012 (CHICAGO) A new study finds being ignored feels just as bad when it happens online as when it happens in person. Authors of the study say Facebook serves as a place to forge social connections.
However, it is often a way to exclude others without the awkwardness of a face-to-face interaction.
In this study, participants who felt rejected online experienced numbness, distancing and withdrawal. The findings were published in the online issue of 'Computers in Human Behavior.'
