Alderman to Rep. Smith: Step down or get to work

April 10, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Smith was arrested last month on a federal bribery charge.

He allegedly took a $7,000 cash bribe in exchange for a letter of support for a daycare center that he thought was seeking a state grant.

Tuesday, 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin said Smith had missed more than 150 votes in the general assembly since his arrest and said Smith is doing a disservice to the people he represents.

"While we understand Rep. Smith has a right to due process and a right to defend himself, he does not have a right to stay at home, not represent the district and also collect a paycheck," Ervin said.

Ervin said Smith could step aside for the rest of his current term and remain a candidate in the November general election.

Smith's office had no comment on the matter.
