Francis Cardinal George critical of President Obama's healthcare plan

April 16, 2012 (CHICAGO)

He said the Roman Catholic Church is in favor of universal healthcare, but doesn't support the law's coverage of assisted suicide and contraception.

"We're self-insured in the archdiocese," said Cardinal George. "We pay for contraception if it has a medical use, if it's not used to prevent pregnancy, which isn't a disease, but is used to regularize a woman's cycle or to prevent cancers in certain instances."

Although he opposes the president's healthcare plan, Cardinal George was quick to emphasize that he stays out of politics and is not arguing against President Obama personally.
