Aurora businessman stranded in Antarctic

April 16, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Bob Bonifas, 74, has been stuck in port at South Georgia Island near the Antarctic peninsula since Tuesday when his cruise ship suffered a power failure.

Bonifas is the founder of Alarm Detection Systems in Aurora. His Antarctic trip is part of a dream to visit all the countries of the world. He spoke to us by satellite phone Monday night.

"There's plenty of food and electricity and we're fine, except we've been here eight days and eight more before we get back, 16 days doing nothing," said Bonifas. "The attendants are trying to do everything they can to keep us entertained, but how many times can you walk among the penguins?"

Another boat is expected to arrive Wednesday to rescue Bonifas and the other passengers.
