Cops: 2 drunken drivers in fatal head-on crash

April 20, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Police say a red car and a silver car were going in opposite directions on South Halsted Street near 71st when they crashed just after 2 a.m. Authorities say they believe the red car swerved into the silver car.

Authorities say the 26-year-old man driving the red car is in stable condition and has been cited with a DUI. They also say the 24-year-old woman driving the silver car was driving drunk, and she was cited with a DUI. She and one of her passengers, another 24-year-old woman, were taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital. Police say some of the crash victims were wedged underneath the dashboard. One of the passengers in the red Grand Prix, described as a woman in her 20s, was ejected from the car and later died, said police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli..

Three blocks of South Halsted had to be shut down as they sifted through the wreckage. Police were waiting for a tow truck to clear the debris three-and-a-half hours later.
