United CEO says Chicago doesn't need 3rd airport

The CEO and chairman of United Continental Holdings says there's no demand for a third airport in the Chicago area.

Jeff Smisek made his comments at the City Club of Chicago, a civic organization. He says any benefits from a proposed airport near Peotone would damage O'Hare International Airport.

Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has called for construction of a third airport. Jackson says the airport would be built at no cost to taxpayers or airlines and would decrease fares by increasing competition.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
