Summer Camps Chicago area

It's the time of year when parents are scrambling to find a summer camp for their child. While many fill up quickly, there are some still available.

Judy Sutton-Taylor, editor of Time Out Chicago Kids has some suggestions for camps that still have openings.

    Chicago Children's Theatre,
  • 1st year for theatre camp at Chicago Children's Theatre
  • Two week camp that culminates in final production written, performed, and designed by campers
  • Also offering Camp Red Kite, as part of the Red Kite Project that's been going for a while - tailored specifically to unique interests and needs of children on the autism spectrum

    • Week-long camps (full and half day available)
    • Go home at the end with their own robot army (6 robots for full day, 3 robots for half day)
    • Able to sign up as late as the Thursday before the next week's camp
    • Extended care
    • Located in Lakeview

      Music Institute,
    • Musical Theater camps for kindergarten through high school
    • Musician-focused camps for kids and for adults; instruction by faculty and resident ensembles
    • Locations in the North Suburbs in Evanston, Lake Forrest and Winnetka

    • Full day camp
    • Various circus activities like spinning plates, clowning, unicycle, and silks/aerials
    • Kids will perform a circus show every 2 weeks
    • Locations all over the city
    • Camp Registration deadline is May 21st

      Hyde Park Arts Center,
    • Variety of creativity camps in 1- and 2-week sessions
    • Some more specialized arts like pottery, sewing, animation and comics, as well as general visual and performing arts camps
    • Also offer after-care

      We Got Game,
    • Variety of camps and leagues for the summer
    • Basketball, volleyball, and summer sports
    • Various locations in and around the city

      Body Trek,
    • Science camp for kids in 5th-8th grade
    • 1- and 2-week camps with half days
    • Includes field trips to locations like the Museum of Science and Industry and hospitals
    • Real dissections (on donated animal organs)
    • Guest speakers
    • Locations on North and South side of Chicago, Hinsdale, and Naperville
