Study: Sleep crucial to maintaining healthy weight

May 1, 2012

Sleeping longer -- more than nine hours each night -- seems to counter the effects of so called obesity genes.

A report in the journal Sleep examined the sleep habits of more than 1,000 sets of twins. Those getting only about seven hours a night were heavier and had less control over their weight. Those getting a least nine hours of sleep had less of a weight issue.

The results add to evidence that adequate sleep is crucial to maintaining a healthy weight.
