Commissioner proposes indigent burial ordinance

May 10, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The plan comes almost four months after a series of ABC 7 I-Team reports uncovered management problems at the morgue. On Thursday, Cook County Commissioner John Fritchey proposed that a 5-acre site at the former Oak Forest Hospital should be set aside for a county cemetery for indigent burials.

"Rather than us pay more money to have the job done, the way it's been done, we believe we can bring this in house and do the job better, for effectively with better oversight," Fritchey said.

Fritchey estimates the county could save hundreds of thousands of dollars a year by resuming its own cemetery operations.
