Teacher union polls members for possible strike

May 11, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Under an education reform law passed in Springfield last year, the union needs to get 75 percent approval from the rank file instead of a simple majoritybefore they can strike.

Administrators and the teachers union have been clashing over a number of issues, including lengthening the school day and expansion of charter schools.

The union is considering taking a strike vote if negotiations with the district break down.

The poll results could be released Friday.
