For the first time, several top cancer organizations are recommending screening for lung cancer.

But the guidelines only recommend annual scans for older current smokers or former heavy smokers between ages of 55 to 74.

The recommended screening involves a low-dose CT scan, a 3-dimensional x-ray to look for lung cancer.

If detected early enough, lung cancer can be treated and survival chances improved.

There is more on the guidelines in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
