Child struck, killed in Skokie crash

May 22, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Authorities say 8-year-old Carter Vo was riding his bike when he was hit.

One car collided with another vehicle, hit the boy and then struck a parked car. The 23-year-old driver of the car that hit the Madison Elementary second grader is in police custody.

Charges are pending.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Carter Vo's father says his only son always tried to please him.

"He always asked my opinion . He asked, 'What do you want me to be?' and I would say, 'Whatever makes you happy,'" Nhu Vo said tearfully.

Residents who live near the intersection claim that more needs to be done to make it safer.

"This entire street's a trainwreck," said area resident Matt Smith. "Main Street from McCormick down to Crawford has no stop signs, the speed limit is 30. However, almost nobody follows it because there's nothing to slow you down."

The Vo family will gather Wednesday at a funeral home.
