Police, dogs sweep Waukegan jail for drugs

May 24, 2012 (WAUKEGAN, Ill.)

For two hours they went cell to cell, searching for drugs and other contraband.

Sheriff Mark Curran said there is currently 638 inmates housed at the jail, and that's a pretty typical number. His department tries to conduct these searches periodically to ensure everyone at the jail is doing their job and that drugs are not getting inside.

"It's something that inmates, if given the opportunity, clearly they would love to do because if they can get them in there, there's a market for them," Curran said.

Officers did not find any contraband or any violations of the jail's code of conduct.
