March aims to end violence in Kankakee

May 25, 2012 (KANKAKEE, Ill.)

They marched outside the county courthouse Thursday night to remember artist Robert Bell and other victims lost to violence.

Police said Bell was walking near his home when he was beaten to death on May 2. Investigators believe Bell was the victim of a robbery.

Residents said his death is the latest in a rash of violent crimes in their community.

"This is a community-wide event," said the artist's friend, Chris Tocke. "This is important. We want our community back and we want to be able to feel safe walking down the street, and that's all this is about."

Bell donated many of his paintings to local charities.

His death remains under investigation. So far no one is in custody.
