Soundproofing materials may have fueled an explosive fire Tuesday at a west suburban VFW hall, according to investigators.

Workers were renovating a gun range in the basement at the time of the fire in Villa Park. Investigators say it appears that the flame from a welding torch set the soundproofing materials on fire.

About 50 people were in the hall at the time getting ready for bingo night.

Nine people were treated for burns. Four of those victims remain hospitalized, but doctors say their conditions are improving.
