1 in 5 Americans has untreated cavities

May 31, 2012

A new government report says many Americans are afraid to go to the dentists because of the high cost of treatment.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control discovered more people are on Medicaid and there are few dentists who participate in the government funded program.

However, the study also points out those with dental benefits refuse to make appointments for fear of extra out of pocket costs.

Researchers say teenagers had the lowest rate of cavities at 13 percent while adults age 20 to 44 had the highest at 25 percent.
