Joliet stops spraying mosquitoes in favor of tablets

Officials in Joliet are waging a cheaper war against West Nile virus carrying mosquitoes this year.

Spraying has been the usual method, but increasing costs caused city leaders to remove it from the 2012 budget.

This year, mosquito fighting "tablets" will be dropped in city catch basins where the mosquitoes that carry West Nile are believed to thrive.

The tablets cost $33,000, compared to $183,000 spent on spraying last year.
