E-mail phishing scam targets disabled veterans in Illinois

June 11, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The IRS says an e-mail phishing scam targets members of the Department of Defense, military members, retirees and civilian defense employees.

The e-mails appear to come from Defense finance and accounting services and displays a ".mil" e-mail address.

The message says those receiving disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs may be able to obtain additional funds from the IRS.

The IRS does not send unsolicited email to taxpayers and never asks for personal and financial information such as pin numbers or passwords.

More information on tax-related phishing scams is available on www.irs.gov, keyword "phishing."
