Postmenopausal women should not take low doses of vitamin D and calcium to prevent broken bones, according to a government panel.

The panel says low doses of vitamin D and calcium have little positive effect and come with a slightly increased risk of side effects. Those side effects can include kidney stones.

For higher doses of vitamin D and calcium supplements, the evidence is still too limited to make recommendations either way.
