Research: Natural birth has advantages for women who have had a C-section

June 22, 2012

In the past, doctors presumed that once a woman underwent a c-section, she would need to do it again for any future births, primarily out of concern that the scar on her uterus would rupture during childbirth.

But that thinking has changed.

Researchers at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York found that a natural delivery has advantages for women who have had a C-section. The mother's hospital stay is shorter and so is her recovery time.

But researchers say most women are not told what their risk of a uterine rupture really is before they undergo a repeat C-section.
