Police said several people gathered along the lakefront and were on a bike path near Cannon Drive when cars approached them.
One car hit two people and then a person in that car opened fire on the group. All three were seriously wounded.
Now, some residents are calling for a greater police presence.
"I just think that there needs to be more security in Chicago," said resident Michelle Villanueva. "Sometimes people don't understand that they have to be going out with other people and not just like by themselves."
Said Ald. Michele Smith, "I've spoken with the police commanders involved here and it is an isolated incident, unrelated to issues in other parts of the city. We are responding to it immediately. It was a personal fight that apparently, got out of hand."
Investigators say the shooting was gang-related. They're looking for the cars involved.
