Questions about 'allergy-friendly' dogs

June 29, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Hypoallergenic canines include breeds such as the labradoodle and poodle.

They are thought to produce less dander and saliva and shed less fur, making them a healthier choice for people with allergies.

However, a report in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology finds that scientists studying the animals say they actually had more allergy-causing protein in their fur than did dogs without the label.

They also discovered the air in their owner's homes contained the same amount of allergenic protein as homes with other dogs.
