City hires tech company to help with parking bill battle

July 2, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has refused to pay bills from Chicago Parking Meters LLC totaling nearly $50 million. The bills are for street closures where meters are left unused and for free parking for people with disabilities.

The city will pay Electronic Knowledge Interchange $300,000 to develop software to track the hundreds of millions of parking transactions to better calculate exactly what the city owes the parking meter company.
