Grayslake girl takes plastic bag battle to Springfield

July 3, 2012 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.)

Abby Goldberg delivered a petition with more than 154,000 signatures. It urges Quinn to veto a bill that would require plastic bag makers to increase recycling in Illinois.

The measure also prohibits individual communities from adopting plastic bag bans.

Environmentalists say the bill is a way for industry to lock the state into using plastic bags.

"Please, Governor Quinn, think about my generation's future and how you can make it more environmentally safe for them," said Goldberg. "And more importantly, let my community decide what is right for it."

"We want to do things that are right for the environment, and that's what I have to focus on," said Quinn.

The governor did not say whether he would sign or veto the bill.
