Study: More men have ACL tears than women

July 9, 2012

Past research suggested that women's knees are more prone to these injuries.

What the study in the Journal of Sports Medicine does find is women experienced these injuries at a younger age between 11 and 20 versus 21 to 30 for men.

The ACL is the key stabilizing ligament in the knee. It's most often injured during sports that involve quick turns or pivoting.

Researchers say this study is a more realistic look at this injury because it involves not just at risk people but the general population.
