Northwest Side wards switch to 'garbage grid'

July 9, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The city is also making changes to the schedule to address overflowing trash cans.

Because of the switch from a ward based pickup, the Tribune reports garbage piled up in the public trash cans in neighborhood business districts and parks.

The mayor's office has said switching to the grid system will save the city tens of millions of dollars.

The 33rd, 38th, 39th, 41st and 45th wards switch to the grid system at the end of the month.
