Railroad officials host meeting on Glenview derailment, bridge collapse

July 16, 2012 (GLENVIEW, Ill.)

Railroad officials hosted a community meeting in Northbrook to discuss the July 4th accident.

Zorine and Burton Lindner died when a train fell from the tracks, causing a bridge to collapse as they drove under it on Shermer road.

Gary Walrath, the CEO of a nearby company, talked about how the derailment has affected the community, saying that one of his employees drove through the underpass just before the accident and was so shaken up that he later resigned from the company.

Walrath said that his company's employees use the underpass about 200-275 times daily, and that it is "just by the grace of God" that they did not lose anyone.

Monday night, Union Pacific engineers explained how they believe heat caused the track to buckle.
