After motions in the case were heard Wednesday, the judge said he will decide at the end of the month when to begin jury selection.
Eddie Fenton was arrested in 2010 in Chicago. Before that, he was in hiding in Iowa and Wisconsin.
Fenton is charged with the April 2006 shooting of Willie Williams, III.
He was killed as he tried to break up a fight outside the Ford City movie theater.
His father, Willie Williams, Jr., has become an advocate against gun violence.
"So many cases out there that no one gets caught at all, and there's a lot of families going thru a lot of pain, I really want to let parents know don't stop fighting," said Williams, Jr.
Fenton has pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder.
