Pilot survives after small plane crashes near lakefront

July 22, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The experimental aircraft went down around 1:30 p.m. Sunday near 93rd Street and the lake.

The FAA says the pilot was heading from Osh Kosh, Wisc. to Benton Harbor, Mich. when he got into trouble and used the dried-up marsh as a landing strip.

The plane flipped when its nose stuck in the mud, but the pilot suffered only minor injuries.

The cause of the crash had not been determined Monday.
