Trucks crash on I-94 injuring 3

July 23, 2012 (PORTAGE, Ind.)

The collision occurred in the westbound lanes near the Portage exit.

A 44-year-old driver from Battle Creek, Michigan, driving a 2011 Freightliner pulling a rail container, operated by Gertsen Interstate Systems, Incorporated out of Melrose Park, Illinois, was in the middle lane when he moved to the right lane and rear ended a 1996 Volvo semi pulling a loaded covered flatbed trailer that had just entered the interstate from State Road 249.

The Volvo semi, owned by Creekwood Carriers LLC out of Hobart, Indiana, was driven by a 54-year-old of Sauk Village, Illinois.

The flatbed trailer was loaded with two steel coils; one coil broke free and slid to one side of the trailer. Both coils had to be off-loaded. The right lane was still closed two hours later for cleanup.

The two men driving the Volvo flatbed suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Frieghtliner driver suffered injuries to his legs and was cited for speeding.
