July 24, 2012 (DETROIT) --There has been a spike on the number of traffic deaths nationally this year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports more than 7,600 people died in car crashes during the first quarter of 2012.
That's an increase of more than 13 percent.
The first quarter of the year usually isn't as bad because people don't drive as much in the cold months. But this year's warm winter meant more people on the road.
