Whooping cough is on the rise nationally and right here in Illinois, where 1,200 cases have been reported so far this year.

Just over 1,500 were reported to state health officials for all of 2011.

Whooping cough causes violent coughing spells and can lead to difficulty breathing, vomiting and a disruption in sleep.

State health officials remind parents that all sixth and ninth grade students are required to show proof they have been vaccinated against whooping cough.
