1,200 whooping cough cases in Ill. so far this year

Just over 1,500 were reported to state health officials for all of 2011.

Whooping cough causes violent coughing spells and can lead to difficulty breathing, vomiting and a disruption in sleep.

State health officials remind parents that all sixth and ninth grade students are required to show proof they have been vaccinated against whooping cough.
