Pier Oddone made the announcement Thursday. He's been in charge at the particle physics laboratory in Batavia for eight years. For a quarter-century scientists have worked on the world's most powerful particle accelerator at Fermilab. They're trying to recreate conditions that existed just after the Big Bang.
Oddone has overseen major scientific discoveries including programs to study dark matter and high-energy cosmic particles.
Oddone's retirement begins July 1, 2013.
