Tips for Parents with College-Bound Kids

August 12, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Everyone has advice for the high school grad – but what about their parents? Harlan Cohen, author of "The Naked Roommate: For Parents Only," (www.collegecountdown.com) or (www.nakedroommate.com) came into our ABC7 studio with his tips for parents as they send off their kids to college.

Harlan's Tips For The New College Parent:

1. Use the 24-Hour rule.
Before getting wrapped up in fixing your child's problem, give it a day. Most problems will resolve themselves in 24 hours.

2. Learn to text.
Also, limit your calls and texts to twice a week.

3. Homesickness is normal.
Encourage your child to get involved in campus life, and remind him or her of a date when s/he will see the family again.

4. You don't have to let go - just loosen your grip.

5. College is 90 percent amazing and 10 percent difficult.
Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable can prevent the 10 percent from taking up 100 percent of your student's time.

6. Sex, Drinking, and Drugs:
Help your student be smart about being stupid.
