Mysterious disease has 'AIDS-like' symptoms

Researchers say a mysterious new illness has left scores of people in Asia -- and some in the United States -- with damaged immune systems.

That means they are unable to fight off germs as healthy people do.

What researchers do know is that this is another kind of acquired immune deficiency that is not inherited and occurs in adults. It does not spread the way AIDS does, through a virus.

What triggers the new illness is unknown, but a report in the New England Journal of Medicine says the disease does not seem to be contagious.
