It happened in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood near 79th Street and Marshfield
According to police, the suspect fired at officers after fatally shooting another young man in front of the officers.
The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday.
Although no police officers were shot, one at the scene suffered a minor injury when he reportedly fell. He was transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital in southwest suburban Evergreen Park.
