15-year-old girl shot in West Side Garfield Park neighborhood

August 31, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Telessia Shields, 15, is hospitalized in stable condition with a gunshot wound to her side. Her family says she was walking home from school when she was shot. Sources say she was not the intended target.

"I just can't believe it happened, you know. I'm just trying to keep everything in proportion and you know what I'm saying? Like I say, I know everything is going to be all right, you know, so I know she will be all right and pull through. That's a good thing," Loretta Wesley, victim's grandmother, said.

Sources tell ABC7 that Shields was not the intended target as someone fired shots along the street. Neighbors say they heard the shots then saw the girl.

'I was coming out the gangway, coming out of my house. My sister said, 'Did that girl get shot?'" said Stephanie Tobias.

Officials are trying to determine if the gunman was on foot or in a vehicle. They say school had just let out.

"She normally walks up and down the street, you know, what I'm saying, with all the other young girls in the community. But it shouldn't happen like this. My son is in school right now today," Elonora Williams said.

No one is in custody.
