More pregnant women treated for high blood pressure

September 11, 2012

New research shows that a growing number of pregnant women are now on high blood pressure medication.

Why that is the case is not clear, but experts say, while it's important to manage high blood pressure during pregnancy, certain drugs are preferred due to their safety profile.

The study found not many women were on these drugs.

The report appears in the journal Hypertension.

Scientists speculate that the obesity epidemic and women delaying childbirth until they are older may explain the high blood pressure increase.
