West Nile virus claims first Cook County victim of 2012

September 12, 2012 (CHICAGO)

The Cook County Department of Public Health says they have seen 58 human cases.

This is the first case to turn deadly.

Two other deaths in Illinois related to the virus have been reported so far this year, in Kane and DuPage counties.

This year's outbreak of West Nile is the most serious since the disease was discovered in the U.S. in 1999.

Officials are warning residents to take precautions.
