State returns $8.1M to Lake Forest company

September 24, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Officials at Tenneco received a check for $8.1 million Monday. The claim is a result of 45 properties transferred on behalf of the Pullman Company, which Tenneco bought in 1996.

State Treasurer Dan Rutherford delivered the check.

"I'd like to present your check, your money, to you. And thank you very much for your diligence in trying to identify this to go back into your state treasury and your balance sheet," Rutherford said.

The Illinois State Treasurer's Office's unclaimed property division is overseeing more than $1.6 billion in cash and safe deposit boxes that have been inactive for at least five years.

The treasurer urges everyone to look into its ICash program, icash.illinois.gov, to see if any of that money is theirs.
