Kountze Cheerleaders' Bible verses on banners at center of hearing today

October 4, 2012 (KOUNTZE, Texas)

A judge is hearing arguments over whether the cheerleaders' Bible verse banners violate the separation of church and state.

The school district told the cheerleaders to get rid of the signs after receiving a notice from the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The Texas Association of School Boards backs the decision.

However, a judge issued a temporary restraining order allowing the cheerleaders to keep their signs until a final decision is made. The cheerleaders say they chose scripture because they were looking for a positive message for banners.

"Instead of focusing on beating the other team, we need to focus on being the best that we can be and honoring God in a way that makes it all better, that betters everyone," said Kountze cheerleader Rebekah Richardson.

The judge could make a final decision Thursday after hearing arguments.
