Prairie Grove teachers strike; District 46 schools closed

October 12, 2012 (PRAIRIE GROVE, Ill.)

That means no school for about 900 students in that district.

The district says its board and teacher negotiations teams met for more than six hours Thursday with a federal mediator and were unable to reach agreement.

"Although the Board has imposed its last best and final offer, the parties have worked diligently to reach an agreement. The Board has agreed to the Union salary requests and the Union request for a 'salary schedule,' a District 46 news release says.

The district says the board and the PGTA have agreed to the amount of money that the board will contribute for health insurance premiums.

The district claims the teachers have introduced new grievances not present when negotiations began.

"Late in the session, the PGTA added several other proposals. The Board believes that agreement can be reached quickly if the parties concentrate on the issue that was open at the beginning of the session last night," the district news release said.

Another mediation session has been scheduled for Friday morning.
