Preckwinkle may tax video poker, slot machines

In an effort to raise money, Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle may apply a tax on all video poker and slot machines in the county.

The tax would be $800 a year per machine.

That would only raise about $1 million and the county has a budget hole of $115 million.

The county would levy the tax using its home rule authority.

Full details of the plan won't be released until Preckwinkle presents her budget proposal on Thursday.
